121 SCREENED FOR COVID-19 DURING LAW ENFORCEMENT OPERATION ON N18.

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari has been leading compliance operations throughout the Province. Having had similar operations in Mahikeng, Lichtenburg, Moruleng, Rustenburg, Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp, the MEC further visited Taung and Vryburg.

In Taung the operation manned by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Traffic officers was on N18 just outside Dryharts village. The Health officers were in hand to do on the spot screening for motorists.

“We are having these operations to ensure the implementation and adherence of the lockdown regulations set to combat the spread of COVID-19”, MEC Lehari said.

During the two hour operation, 145 vehicles were stopped and checked. The Health officials conducted on the spot screening to 121 people, all of whom were found to be negative. These included taxi commuters though the sheer number made it impossible for all stopped to be screened.

The law enforcement officers also had their hands full. Of stopped vehicles, 30 were returned for not having necessary permits with two coming from Free State and Northern Cape respectively. Three were issued with fines for driving without licenses and two for expired vehicle discs.

“All these; the screening on motorists, passengers and commuters shows the state of our readiness in combating the spread of the virus. The fines given also shows that law enforcement shall not slacken simply because of lockdown”, said MEC Lehari.

The MEC also appealed to citizens to take these measures seriously. “This disease doesn’t discriminate and we earnestly ask people to comply”.

The MEC has also reminded taxi operators that today (Friday, 03/04/2020) is the last day of the relaxation of the lockdown regulations. He also appealed to everyone who had been exempted to use letter given for what they were issued and desist from abusing them.
